Sewage treatment is the process of removing contaminants from wastewater , primarily from household sewage. It includes physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove these contaminants and produce environmentally safe treated wastewater (or treated effluent). A by-product of sewage treatment is usually a semi-solid waste or slurry, called sewagesludge, that has to undergo further treatment before being suitable for disposal or land application. We visited the Sewage Treatment Plant at Pilani to witness the recycling of sewage water. This plant is located close to our school. Our school has three sections Junior Section, Middle Section and Senior Section. The sewage water from all the three sections is flushed to the sewage treatment plant. Here the dirty water moves through three tanks consisting of Aerator machines which capture the dirt and progressively purifies water. Finally the water is collected in a tank. This water is claimed to be 25% more pure than the filter water supplied at homes in Pilani. A lush green compound is also maintained around the plant using the purified water. This purified water is supplied to all the three sections for gardening purposes. The various uses of the Sewage Treatment Plant are as follows:-- 1. reduces load on regular water supply 2. waste water can be used for gardening purposes 3. regular supply of water is maintained The children enjoyed the trip and keenly observed the working of the Sewage Treatment Plant. They were also able appreciate this method to overcome water scarcity to a great extent.
